You know how, every now and then, you see or hear something that changes your mind about a subject that you’re wary to change your mind about? That sentence was probably confusing.
I guess that could be better said in that no one really likes to have their beliefs challenged. Some people just go “NO! YOU’RE WRONG! I DON’T CARE ABOUT YOUR ‘FACTS!'” and some people go “OMG! I’VE BEEN LIVING A LIE AND NOW I TOTALLY BELIEVE YOU!”
I tend to do one or the other. I’m trying, however, to examine that which people are saying, consider both sides of the argument, then decide based on that. It’s hard to find a balance between being intentionally ignorant and being a sheep.
Obviously, this is a silly example, because no one would see that and say, “my belief that X coffee is the best is now challenged and I will either a) NO! YOU’RE WRONG! I DON’T CARE ABOUT YOUR ‘FACTS!’ or b) OMG! I’VE BEEN LIVING A LIE AND NOW I TOTALLY BELIEVE YOU!” Nor would we be likely to go around the world and test the theory to make up our own opinion of the World’s Best Coffee.
But, hopefully we can all see how this can translate to bigger issues.
I don’t know why I felt like blogging about this. I am also sitting in my school library instead of my History class.
