Lipstick Diaries pt. VII – Red Velvet

IMGP4303

I’ve seen this pin floating around for a while, and just recently decided it was something I absolutely had to get: Lime Crime’s Velvetine Collection: Red Velvet.

So I got it, and I LOVE IT. It’s so velvety.

One complaint: I’m obviously just an idiot and assumed that since it was matte, it was a non-transfer stain–but NOPE. Learned otherwise when I got a bunch of red all over everything.

Also, it’s a little difficult to apply with the brush that’s given. I used a little lip brush for better accuracy.

Final tip: make sure your lips are super hydrated before you put it on, because it can feather otherwise.

Lipstick Diaries pt VI – Montage

I decided posting a new post for every…single…lipstick would be tedious and annoying, so instead–a video montage!! The only problem is I didn’t write which were which on the screen because they’re out of order and some of the clips are too short. SO, The Lipstick Montage Key:

Maybelline Vibrant Mandarin

Vibrant Mandarin – #885; VERY bright and gorgeous! Difficult to differentiate between this and Neon Red (below). Mostly they’re all this one. And if it’s not this one, buy this one anyway. I really don’t like the Neon Red.

Neon Red Maybelline Vivids

Neon Red – #890; Not my favorite red, appears the least in the vid. Buy the Vibrant Mandarin instead.

Vivid Rose Maybelline Vivids

Vivid Rose #875; My FAVORITE of all of them! Super velvety, this one is the obvious pink one in the video.

Pinkpop Maybelline Vivids

Pink Pop #860; Looks really good in video. Also see my post on it here.

Brazen Berry Maybelline Vivids

Brazen Berry – #905; really pretty – my favorite shots were mostly this one.

Zion National Park

I was in St. George this weekend and was able to go to Zion National Park. It was beautiful! The contrast of the red dirt and the green foliage was striking. I also was able to spend a lot of time with my family, which always leaves me feeling buoyed up. We hiked up to the Emerald Pools and it was so beautiful. There were a ton of people there that didn’t speak English–I was really surprised! Anyway, I hope you can enjoy some of the pictures I took!

Is it summer yet?

Summer Outfit

I love sunshine. I love summer. I dislike snow, especially how much snow we’ve had this winter. That’s partly because I spent my last winter in California, where it was 80 degrees in January and I laid out in the sun. Yesterday it got up to 48 degrees, I think, and it had me wishing for Spring so badly! I can’t take ANY more snow!! I just want to wear my cute new swim suit and lay out in the sun!

So sometimes, when my desire for summer just gets to be too much, I pull out my favorite shorts and a summery t-shirt, turn up the heat and sit around in them.

Not sure if it helped.

Dear warm weather,

Please come soon. Melt all the snow. Gimme those Western endless blue skies.

Threateningly,

Britt.

Valentine’s Day Nails

valentine's day heart nails

I had shellac on my nails over the past few weeks–and since the polish was dark, it was super noticeable when my nails started to grow. Instead of trying to remove it myself (which you can do by filing of the top layer, then soaking in acetone for a while, then filing more and more off as you alternate soaking), I just went and had a salon remove it. They also filed my nails nicely and removed my cuticles (which is the best part).

Like I said, the color I had for almost a month was dark, so this time I decided I’d go for a lighter color. What better than Essie’s Ballet Slippers that my amazing sister got me for Christmas? I saw this tutorial on Pinterest and just knew it’d be my next project. Since I’m not super talented, I decided to only do the heart on one hand. Surprisingly, it looks really cool like that. I also like how the heart is facing me.

Fun fact: did you know the Egyptians (and other people) used to believe that there was a vein running directly from the ring finger to the heart–and that’s why we put rings on that finger? We now know that’s not true, but the symbolism is beautiful!

Service helps the heart

sparrow dress v2

Sometimes it feels so silly putting these photos up and saying “this is what I wore today,” but I’ve been doing it for a year and a half, so I guess why stop now? Plus I totally love that sweater I’m wearing and I wanted to wear the shoes, so this is what I came up with. I also did those loose braids, which I haven’t done in years. Also I haven’t worn this dress in forever. The weather was around 32 degrees F today, so of course it felt like springtime and I just had to wear something a little lighter than usual.

Something great happened to me yesterday afternoon, and I wanted to share:

I am a worrier and a chronic over-thinker and sometimes I create entire problems that don’t exist with people I know. Even though I’m aware that it’s probably just made up in my head, I can’t forget about it when I’m around that person and tend to treat them accordingly. Anyway, I decided to get over the perceived injustices and participate in an activity at which said person would be present. At first, it was a little bit hard on the heart (it usually is when you want to dislike someone you know you shouldn’t), but I ended up realizing that I really don’t care about my imaginary problem and finally managed to get over it.

As you may suppose, I felt way better.

THEN, I was driving home from said activity and as I was nearing my neighborhood, a song I really like came on the radio. I was feeling awfully good about myself and the song was helping, so instead of turning onto my street, I decided to turn around and go to the store across the street to buy some Oreos and take them to my mom (since she had mentioned wanting some).

WELL, I was about to have two good-deeds done (sucking up my issues and being kind PLUS Oreos for my mother), when I pulled into a parking spot and a lady came up to me and asked me if I had jumper cables. I did of course (usually my car’s the one that needs them) and let her use both them and my battery to help start their little yellow bug.

I didn’t feel like it was anything special–I mean, I didn’t even do anything! They just had me stay in the the car while one of the men there did most of the work. Afterward, I was about to walk into the store when the woman came up to me and said how much she appreciated what I did for them. The girls with her all chorused in agreement. I was so surprised! I just felt like it was what anyone one do, and I was so happy to help (helping others really does give you a high)–but their gratitude made it so much better.

And then she shook my hand and handed me a folded bill, insisted I take it and hurried me off. When I went into the store, I looked and realized she gave me $20. Twenty dollars! When I came back out, they were gone and I was left with two packs of double-stuffed Oreos (one for me and for my mom), $20 and some serious warmfuzzies (best part)–none of which would have happened if I hadn’t finally decided to suck up my self-pity in the first place.

Feels good.

Snowy Farewell

IMGP9571

Yesterday afternoon my family and I went and dropped off my cousin at the MTC. This picture is of me, him, and my mother. It was really bittersweet because this kid and his brother are the closest things I’ve had to a brother. I love them dearly and am excited to hear about all of his adventures in Chile over the next two years.

IMGP9584

What a good-looking kid. He’ll be great. Now to write him his first letter! I told him I’d write him every day and he looked at me and said, “don’t you think that’s a little much?” And here I was, trying to be nice, thought he’d be happy–so I said I’d write him once a year instead. One down, one to go!

AustinMTC

Obviously, I’m really spiritual and write only about the important things. Plus, you know something is cool when the edges are all singed. Helpful hint: do the singing outside because now my room smells like burning paper. I’m going to include the above two pictures for him. Even though this just seems like a confusing thing to send to anyone, especially that little temporary tattoo, it’s exactly the kind of random that is my relationship with my family. My hoped-for reaction would be that he would give his goofy laugh and that all his MTC friends would just be really confused. Next week I’m going to send him a pink & glittery letter to hopefully embarrass him. MWAHAHA.

Family means Christmas

As the Christmas season nears, I’ve realized a few things: most of them being that family is really awesome. Also, that I really like to look as pale in photos for some reason.

Anyway, here’s the story of my sprained ankle: It was terrible and one of the most painful things ever and I thought it was broken and they’d have to amputate. I knew I was being a bit dramatic (who, ME?) and I especially felt bad because I’m the only female in my immediate family that doesn’t just look at some stairs wrong and end up with broken/torn things.

At first, my sister pointed and laughed (like any good sister), then came and helped me do the one-foot-hop into the house. I had managed to hold it together until then, when I just started crying. She apologized for teasing and brought me a couple mini-snickers.

As I mentioned before, I’m not used to needing help, so my pride was definitely tried (RHYME) as I had to ask for a glass of water, some ibuprofen, a pair of sweatpants instead of my snow-soaked leggings, and a pair of slippers. I don’t know what I thought they would do, but I was so surprised when they responded with “of course” and “don’t worry, we’ll take care of it” and eagerly helped. Not only that, but since all the women in my family have back, knee, ankle, neck, etc. problems but me (and my dad was at work), my brother-in-law was chosen to help me back down our porch stairs to the car. He came and picked me right up, without hesitation, and carried me to the car. He also took me out for pancakes on Monday. He also teases me a lot. He’s the brother I never had!

On the way to the Urgent Care, the pain subsided, but my mom told me that sometimes sprains hurt worse than breaks. I said I thought it was fine, although now I couldn’t go running for a week or so.

A week? She laughed. If it’s broken or the ligaments are torn, try SIX weeks! I about fainted! The semester starts in only 3 weeks! I laid my chair back and was silent until we arrived.

The nurse said “sometimes sprains hurt worse than breaks,” then made me WALK by mySELF to the X-Ray. Then the other nurse was helping me move my foot on that little X-Ray table and I commented how glad I was that I shaved my legs, but I wish I’d have painted my toenails. But, I said, you probably don’t care about whether my legs are shaved. She laughed and said, “there are much worse things than unshaven legs. There was a time I didn’t think that.” She then burst into a fit of giggles. I was giggling too, but I don’t think about the same thing.

To ruin all the dramatic buildup, the doctor said my ankle’s just a bad sprain (he went “oooh” when he saw how much it had swelled. So did the nurse! Way to make me feel self-conscious!) and said, according to my x-rays, I have “excellent joint space” in my feet and I should be fine after a few days (it took like 3 months).

I felt kind of silly for making it a big deal, but the last time I hurt myself, I was like 4 years old. 15 years ago. I couldn’t comprehend for a while the feeling of something hurting and the hurt not going away after a couple minutes. I didn’t realize how lucky I am to be blessed with such a healthy, strong body. I also didn’t realize how lucky I am to be around people that are totally willing to help with my problems. Maybe I should utilize that more.

Obviously, this would’ve been much harder without the overwhelmingly loving help my family gave me and I am SO excited to be with everyone for Christmas this year!

Corduroy, Bows and Stripes

I realize I wear my striped shirt way too much, but it’s my favorite shirt, guys! It is! And this bow jacket was a gift. I’ve had it for almost a year now, and still have never worn it for a blog post. I keep wanting to, though. I just have never found a cute enough outfit. I wore it to church last Sunday and really liked the outfit. It’s a bit more wintery, so I’ll post those photos later.

Other than that, you may have noticed more recipe photos than normal from me. It’s true, it’s true, I’m actually cooking regularly. Later this week, I’ll be posting about how cooking wasn’t as hard as I thought it’d be.

Until then, thank you guys so much for your continued support and view. It really means so much to me.

Social Change

I just recently got accepted to present at the Utah Valley University Conference on Writing for Social Change. I’m really excited, because it means I can present my paper on feminism to some people and maybe inspire social change. That’s kind of a big deal.

Also, I am doing something else really exciting. Getting all A’s. In all 6 of my classes. The semester is about only halfway done, so we’ll see where it goes, but it’s amazing how much more motivated I am to be successful in school after a) taking a year off and b) having figured out what I want to do with my life.

The last thing that’s going on in my life that is keeping me from being a very good blogger is that I have been rehearsing and practicing to accompany the BYU contemporary dancers. I got this amazing opportunity from one of the most musically apt people I know from Church. He randomly presented me with this chance, and I’ve totally been bitten by the performance bug. I just love it. We did our first performance today and it went really well. It felt amazing to sing with such a talented person and to a magical guitarist, then knowing two people were dancing to something that I was helping to create–was amazing.

I have a lot going on right now, personally and with school, but I’m encouraged by the inspiring messages of those around me. I am so lucky and grateful for the opportunities I get to spend my life in such uplifting circumstances. I am growing in ways I never thought possible–and it’s not even because of the Halloween candy!

Fall 2012

I love all seasons, but I have to say, I think Fall-time gets the most attention from me. Even though it snowed this morning, but the mid-afternoon it all melted and I was determined to get some photos before the colors all turned to brown.

I have been a bad blogger lately, but I’m determined to change it.

In good news, I might be going to 80 degree Vegas this weekend to celebrate Katrin’s 21st! And I get to be very artsy in one of my classes right now.

I also saw three people I haven’t seen in over a year at school this week. Two I enthusiastically said hello to, one I avoided like the plague.

Halloween and Thanksgiving are almost upon us. I am so excited for the holiday season!

Hey, thanks to all of you who read these posts. It really means a lot to me.

Shellac Again

I couldn’t resist, I had to get my nails done with shellac again. It’s just too convenient! I’m telling you! I am seriously contemplating buying my own stuff to do it myself!

Although it was quite an adventure getting these done, I ended up 45 minutes away from where I live, got called a liar, almost suffocated from fumes–but got free chocolate (which is really all that counts for anything).

Green

I just realized I posted this without any text, so a lot of people got emailed this with…no text, just pictures. Sorry.

I was recently told that green “is my color.” I think I’ll wear green more.

Today I’m not going to class and spending the day in Salt Lake, with my friend Chelsea. She came and visited me while I was living in LA too. I’m really really excited.

Old Friends

This is my friend Sarah. I decided to put it in bold, because she sort of looks like me and I would be very offended if people commented saying, “Wow, Britt, you’re skinny now!”

If the thought crossed your mind, here’s what I have to say about that.

Sarah and I have known each other for around 12-15 years. I was 5 when I moved to the city we ended up both living in 1996. That’s a really long time to know someone and still be around each other.

Well, we reunited a while ago and–what else do I do with friends but take photos? So this is where we ended up! Click on the photos in the gallery below to make ‘em bigger.
