Vivid Rose Maybelline Vivids

Lipstick Diaries pt VI – Montage

I decided posting a new post for every…single…lipstick would be tedious and annoying, so instead–a video montage!! The only problem is I didn’t write which were which on the screen because they’re out of order and some of the clips are too short. SO, The Lipstick Montage Key:

Maybelline Vibrant Mandarin

Vibrant Mandarin – #885; VERY bright and gorgeous! Difficult to differentiate between this and Neon Red (below). Mostly they’re all this one. And if it’s not this one, buy this one anyway. I really don’t like the Neon Red.

Neon Red Maybelline Vivids

Neon Red – #890; Not my favorite red, appears the least in the vid. Buy the Vibrant Mandarin instead.

Vivid Rose Maybelline Vivids

Vivid Rose #875; My FAVORITE of all of them! Super velvety, this one is the obvious pink one in the video.

Pinkpop Maybelline Vivids

Pink Pop #860; Looks really good in video. Also see my post on it here.

Brazen Berry Maybelline Vivids

Brazen Berry – #905; really pretty – my favorite shots were mostly this one.

Lipstick Diaries pt. V – Pink Pop

IMGP2817

Maybelline Pink Pop #860On my nails is Essie’s Play Date and on the lips is Maybelline’s Vivids collection #860 Pink Pop. I really like this one. This is the first of the Vivids collection that I bought, and whew–it is definitely bright! I really like it! I especially wish I had more places and outfits to wear with such a fun color.

August 1st is coming up soon, which is the day I release a new project I’ve been pouring my heart and soul into at work. And hopefully you will all partake. More on that later.

My two favorite songs right now (you’d know if you followed me on Twitter):

Lipstick Diaries pt. IV – Coral-ish

IMGP2710

IMGP2703I bought 5 new shades of lipstick, all of the Maybelline Vivid collection. This particular shade is #870 – Shocking Coral. I really like it. It stays on well after you blot and rocks the intense/wow-factor really well. Makes me feel like a lady. But a wild lady.

It also made me feel like I needed to wear my hair up to really show it off right, but I rarely wear my hair up, so I thought I’d give it a go with leaving it down. My hair is my favorite prop. When it’s up, I feel like I don’t know what to do in photos.

The only thing I would comment about the lipstick is that it doesn’t look particularly coral-y. These photos were edited so it’s not quite that dark of a purple either, but the nail polish I’m wearing is Essie’s Peach Daiquiri, so you can tell it’s not all that close to a traditional coral.

Below is a photo that wasn’t edited so you can see the true color:

Maybelline Vivids Shocking Coral 870

I have a very exciting project I’m working on that I hope to be “unveiling” around the 1st of August, so keep your eyes peeled for that!

Southern Party Moonshine

A Southern Food Night

Southern party sign

I don’t know how much I’ve talked about it on here, but I am proudly and loudly from the South. North Carolina, to be specific, and I am always grateful for the chance to celebrate where I was born and raised.

I am lucky to live by a few friends that are also from the South.

I suppose I should clarify: I’m from the South. They are from…the South. As in–I lived in the suburbs of the capital where people from everywhere came to participate in the growing technological advances in what they call the “Research Triangle.” They are from Mississippi.

Alas, my Mississipian friends were missing their Southern roots as much as I and had the brilliant idea to throw a Southern Food Night! The premise was basic: come, bring something Southern that we can all share.

Cut up watermelon in the rind

Of course, to Utahns, that sounds like “bring cornbread or coleslaw.” To me, it was an invitation into heaven! I went all out! I made hush puppies, pulled pork, corn bread, “Moonshine,” and of course cut up some strawberries and watermelon. It was a hit. In fact, it was such a hit that I didn’t get any pictures of the food before it was gone!

Anyway, just in case you’re thinking of a Southern Party, here’s what I did and the recipes I used:

Hush Puppies Recipe:

  • Oil to fill a pot
  • 1.5 cups cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 beaten egg

Mix it all up and drop by the spoonful into a pot of oil. Flip them when the time comes (they’ll be brown–a dark gold at the lightest), then place on some paper towels to dry. All very simple. Eat with butter! This one was fun to make, because almost no one knew what hush puppies were!

North Carolina Style Pulled Pork Recipe (4-6lbs):

I don’t have a smoker, so I (don’t hate me for it) use my slow cooker. I’m telling you, it’s not the same, but it’s darn close!

The rub:

  • 2.5 teaspoons paprika (I used smoked)
  • 1.5 teaspoons brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder

Rub it on, then wrap it up and refrigerate overnight.

The sauce:

  • 1.5 cups apple cider vinegar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 4 teaspoons salt
  • 3.25 teaspoons crushed red pepper flakes
  • 3/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 3/4 teaspoon white pepper

Mix it up, then place the meat fat side up into the slow-cooker. Pour about 1/3 of the sauce over the meat. Cook on low for 7 hours. After that, pull the meat and pour on another 3rd of the sauce. Let cook on high for another half an hour. Transfer the meat with tongs into a serving dish, then pour as much sauce as you think it needs over the meat, then serve with my favorite sauces!

Southern Party Moonshine

To add another twist to a non-alcoholic event, I made some old-fashioned classic lemonade (this recipe) and labeled the jar “Moonshine!” Even though moonshine is clear, people still thought it was a cute touch.

That was the party! I really wish I had bothered to take any more pictures, but I was so caught up in everything that I didn’t get the chance! Next time I make these delicious southern foods, I’ll be sure to add the photos.

Have a great Southern Party! (Confederate flag optional)

Valentine’s Day Nails

valentine's day heart nails

I had shellac on my nails over the past few weeks–and since the polish was dark, it was super noticeable when my nails started to grow. Instead of trying to remove it myself (which you can do by filing of the top layer, then soaking in acetone for a while, then filing more and more off as you alternate soaking), I just went and had a salon remove it. They also filed my nails nicely and removed my cuticles (which is the best part).

Like I said, the color I had for almost a month was dark, so this time I decided I’d go for a lighter color. What better than Essie’s Ballet Slippers that my amazing sister got me for Christmas? I saw this tutorial on Pinterest and just knew it’d be my next project. Since I’m not super talented, I decided to only do the heart on one hand. Surprisingly, it looks really cool like that. I also like how the heart is facing me.

Fun fact: did you know the Egyptians (and other people) used to believe that there was a vein running directly from the ring finger to the heart–and that’s why we put rings on that finger? We now know that’s not true, but the symbolism is beautiful!

Ombre and Sheer Shirt

I’m kind of starting to like my glasses…but I really can’t wait until my doctor in California sends me my prescription so I can go buy new contacts. I miss them. Got this shirt on Monday from Kohl’s.

Things:

I’ve been to Yogurtland an ungodly amount of times over the past two weeks. Their cheesecake + strawberry + strawberry/lemon sorbet + cheesecake bites + coconut shavings + boba + almond slivers + strawberries + yogurt chips + mochi = HEAVENLY BLISS. I’m afraid to try anything else now.

I am a Soprano One in the Women’s Choir at my school. I’ve always been an Alto. It’s exciting and fun.

I’m listening to Britney Spears.

The blog’s “one year” was like a month ago and I forgot to mention it and make a huge deal.

I am in love with the song Kaleidoscope Heart by Sara Bareilles. LOOK IT UP. Better yet, here’s a link. This song taught me how to spell “kaleidoscope.”

I haven’t written in my journal for 10 whole days and it’s killing me. I love venting all my super private, not-socially-acceptable-when-said-aloud thoughts. And other deep, philosophical streams of consciousness that no one wants to hear.

Politics. SO MUCH POLITICS EVERYWHERE.

I have reached a new level: Instagram

It all started with this photo.

I wear contacts. I lost a couple boxes of my contacts. I have avoided it as long as possible, but I am now out of contacts. Good thing I have this one pair of glasses.

I don’t usually wear glasses, I prefer to not wear glasses. They’re annoying and I like my sunglasses.

Now I don’t have a choice. …procrastination, children–this is where it gets you. I once went a whole month with glasses when I lived in California because of the same thing. I started dating a boy who only saw me with my glasses, so once I went back to normal, it freaked him out. My normal was his weird. …Weird.

On top of all this, it’s the first week of classes. Now everyone I meet is going to assume I always wear glasses and the day I show up without them, I guarantee at least a few people WON’T RECOGNIZE ME. It happens every time. I don’t know what it is, but for some reason, people really have a hard time recognizing people they don’t know very well if they go from glasses to non-glasses. I don’t understand it, but it’s going to be awkward to have people say, “oh, what’s you’re name?” and when I answer, they unfailingly go, “OH! I didn’t recognize you!”

“Yeah, it’s probably the glasses.”

“OH! Of course…that makes sense.”

Oh, does it? Please enlighten me.

So that happens.

I do like my glasses because the dark frames allow me to not have to worry as much about makeup, but if given a choice I will always opt for contacts.

So I took this photo on my way to class on Wednesday, because it’s rare that I wear my glasses, if you haven’t gathered. I was like, “AH! It’s not so bad! Maybe I’ll tweet about it.”

And then, something terrible happened. I couldn’t bring myself to post an unedited photo.

So I got Instagram.

HOW SAD IS THAT!? I only like you for your insta-filters, Instagram, but you know that, don’t you?! I think Instagram is like being flattered when your waiter shamelessly flirts with you: we all know it’s just to get a better tip, but we giggle and let ourselves feel special anyway. Every time I post a filtered-by-Instagram photo of myself, I’ll know deep down it’s to hide some level of insecurity. I’ll smile and be like “HEY, let’s pretend my skin really looked that clear today” –because Instagram is my flirty waiter and I like to feel special. OKAY? (Although if you look closely, you can sort of see the two pink dots on my cheek, as gifted by the lovely Lady of the Month.)

Funny how when I upload and meticulously edit all the photos I take on my digital SLR (in a sense, filtering them, just not at the push of a button like Instagram) it’s suddenly considered art…

Maybe editing through photoshop is like an off-the-clock waiter going out of his way to flirt with you: meaningful gratification.

That’s that! What’s your flirty waiter? Something you shamelessly do/accept when you know it’s really just kind of shallow? If you use Instagram, do you see it as your flirty waiter, or as something bigger and better that actually is meaningful? Let me know in the comments below!

When It Rains…

(the above photo is my absolute absolute absolute favorite)

When it rains in the summer, nothing makes me happier…but then the rain ends and you’re left with intense humidity. Not as fun. Leggings from Forever21, sweater from Old Navy, shoes from Forever Young Shoes.

Jewelry

I’m not a huge jewelry person. I usually don’t wear it at all. When I was younger, I wore the biggest, most flashy jewelry I could find. I’m glad I’m over that. Above is a set I bought from Charlotte Russe. Usually, their jewelry seems cheap to me, but I actually liked these pieces.

I have a couple more bracelets that I love so much, I just may get back into the habit of wearing jewelry again.

Chocolate Chip Butterscotch Cookies

WARNING: THESE ARE THE BEST BAKED GOODS I’VE EVER MADE EVER EVER.

You guys. Something amazing happened. THESE COOKIES TURNED OUT AWESOME!

It’s all thanks to Pinterest, really. One of the most wonderful ladies I work with brought these cookies and they were amazing. Today, when I decided to make cookies, I knew this was the only recipe for me.

In case you haven’t been following my blog, I really really really really can’t bake or cook, but especially bake. Usually everything is dry and overdone, EVEN IF I only bake them for like half the time they list.

I don’t know what it is. But these cookies turned out PERFECTLY. You know a recipe has got to be magical if even I can make them taste good.

Here’s a link to the pin. Below is the recipe with my modifications, the original of which comes from here:

Ingredients:
3/4 c. unsalted butter, softened
3/4 c. brown sugar
1/4 c. granulated sugar (I used 2 parts Splenda, 1 part real sugar! You couldn’t even tell!)
1 egg
2 tsp. vanilla extract
2 c. all purpose flour
2 tsp. cornstarch
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 c. semi-sweet chocolate chips, 1/2 c. butterscotch chips

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

2. She has a bunch of other directions listed on her website, but I didn’t pay attention to these while measuring out the ingredients, so I had everything all in one bowl before I realized I was apparently supposed to sort things and add them in at separate times. Haha, oops. BUT! They still turned out fabulous!! It’s like the recipe you can’t mess up!!

3. The cookies only apparently need 8-10 minutes! I put them in for 9 each and when I pulled them out, I was on the verge of tears because they looked completely under done. I trusted in the recipe though (she says absolutely no longer than 10 minutes) and after sitting for about 5 minutes once I took them out of the oven…they are PERFECT. I swear it. Can you tell I’m obsessed?

I wrapped up about six of them in a cup, then tied it off with a pink ribbon! The paper has a quote from John 13:35, and I blotted out the phone numbers. I love making cute crafts like these! I dropped them off at a house of a girl I go to church with and hopefully she (and you) loves this recipe as much as I do!

Balloons and Sparrows

I really like balloons, so when I came to work yesterday and had balloons waiting for me, I was all over them. As you can see by the new header. And the photos below. I even did my hair and nails and makeup all nice! Balloons are special, I’m telling you. The dress is from Forever21, shoes are from Forever Young Shoes. Hair I got from this tutorial on Pinterest (and modified it a little).

Driving Back

I got back last night from my trip to St George. 4 hour drive in 3. Yeah. I basically listened to music really loud, drove fast and was accompanied by a blood-red sunset. The sun was RED. It was cool and also creeped me out at first.

And here’s a photo of my bruise that I mentioned on Friday. It isn’t exactly delicious or attractive, so I made the photo smaller. You’re welcome.

It was a great trip. I always love seeing my family. Every single person I talked to told me I should move there. It’s beautiful. A paradise…I was just starting to get used to the heat when I left yesterday. Maybe after I’m done with school, I’ll consider moving there! It’s an option. Always an option…but since I left North Carolina in 2009, I’ve moved 6 times: to Cedar Hills, UT, to Rexburg, ID, to Provo, to a different place in Provo, to Los Angeles, back to Provo. That’s so many times to move! I just want to stay in one place for now, but seriously, seeing my family and spending time with them was really amazing. I already miss them!

After A Long Day Of Shopping

Nice to see you again, yellow blazer! I coincidentally wore those same shoes, too, I just didn’t get a good photo of them. Nails are done with Essie’s Play Date and a top coat of Sinful Colors’ Purple Diamond. Dress is from Papaya. I got my necklace from a little boutique about a year ago and the ring on the right hand is from Charlotte Russe, the LOVE ring, I can’t remember where it’s from or when I even got it…they have them everywhere, though.

I wore this to a family friend’s reception on Saturday!

In other news, I hate it when I do that thing when I smile and my teeth go over my lip. It’s so unattractive. I should’ve gotten braces.

Oh well. So this week, I’m going to St. George! It’ll be fun. Fingers crossed I come back tan.

Mauve & Pink Nails

I’ve always been a bit confused about what the color “mauve” is. According to Wikipedia (because they have an article on Mauve), it can be considered a dirty pink and a shade of purple. Apparently, this particular mauve is a “mauve taupe” color.

By the way, I always thought mauve was pronounced “mahv,” but it’s a french word, so it’s actually pronounced “mohv,” like rhymes with “grove.” Silly French!

The pink on the outside is my Tropical Fiesta from Milani. I just used scotch tape. Did them at work, what’s new.

So, there you have it, a lesson on the color mauve and an interesting color combo for Spring/Summer nails. You like?
