Valentine’s Day Nails

valentine's day heart nails

I had shellac on my nails over the past few weeks–and since the polish was dark, it was super noticeable when my nails started to grow. Instead of trying to remove it myself (which you can do by filing of the top layer, then soaking in acetone for a while, then filing more and more off as you alternate soaking), I just went and had a salon remove it. They also filed my nails nicely and removed my cuticles (which is the best part).

Like I said, the color I had for almost a month was dark, so this time I decided I’d go for a lighter color. What better than Essie’s Ballet Slippers that my amazing sister got me for Christmas? I saw this tutorial on Pinterest and just knew it’d be my next project. Since I’m not super talented, I decided to only do the heart on one hand. Surprisingly, it looks really cool like that. I also like how the heart is facing me.

Fun fact: did you know the Egyptians (and other people) used to believe that there was a vein running directly from the ring finger to the heart–and that’s why we put rings on that finger? We now know that’s not true, but the symbolism is beautiful!

Ombre and Sheer Shirt

I’m kind of starting to like my glasses…but I really can’t wait until my doctor in California sends me my prescription so I can go buy new contacts. I miss them. Got this shirt on Monday from Kohl’s.

Things:

I’ve been to Yogurtland an ungodly amount of times over the past two weeks. Their cheesecake + strawberry + strawberry/lemon sorbet + cheesecake bites + coconut shavings + boba + almond slivers + strawberries + yogurt chips + mochi = HEAVENLY BLISS. I’m afraid to try anything else now.

I am a Soprano One in the Women’s Choir at my school. I’ve always been an Alto. It’s exciting and fun.

I’m listening to Britney Spears.

The blog’s “one year” was like a month ago and I forgot to mention it and make a huge deal.

I am in love with the song Kaleidoscope Heart by Sara Bareilles. LOOK IT UP. Better yet, here’s a link. This song taught me how to spell “kaleidoscope.”

I haven’t written in my journal for 10 whole days and it’s killing me. I love venting all my super private, not-socially-acceptable-when-said-aloud thoughts. And other deep, philosophical streams of consciousness that no one wants to hear.

Politics. SO MUCH POLITICS EVERYWHERE.

I have reached a new level: Instagram

It all started with this photo.

I wear contacts. I lost a couple boxes of my contacts. I have avoided it as long as possible, but I am now out of contacts. Good thing I have this one pair of glasses.

I don’t usually wear glasses, I prefer to not wear glasses. They’re annoying and I like my sunglasses.

Now I don’t have a choice. …procrastination, children–this is where it gets you. I once went a whole month with glasses when I lived in California because of the same thing. I started dating a boy who only saw me with my glasses, so once I went back to normal, it freaked him out. My normal was his weird. …Weird.

On top of all this, it’s the first week of classes. Now everyone I meet is going to assume I always wear glasses and the day I show up without them, I guarantee at least a few people WON’T RECOGNIZE ME. It happens every time. I don’t know what it is, but for some reason, people really have a hard time recognizing people they don’t know very well if they go from glasses to non-glasses. I don’t understand it, but it’s going to be awkward to have people say, “oh, what’s you’re name?” and when I answer, they unfailingly go, “OH! I didn’t recognize you!”

“Yeah, it’s probably the glasses.”

“OH! Of course…that makes sense.”

Oh, does it? Please enlighten me.

So that happens.

I do like my glasses because the dark frames allow me to not have to worry as much about makeup, but if given a choice I will always opt for contacts.

So I took this photo on my way to class on Wednesday, because it’s rare that I wear my glasses, if you haven’t gathered. I was like, “AH! It’s not so bad! Maybe I’ll tweet about it.”

And then, something terrible happened. I couldn’t bring myself to post an unedited photo.

So I got Instagram.

HOW SAD IS THAT!? I only like you for your insta-filters, Instagram, but you know that, don’t you?! I think Instagram is like being flattered when your waiter shamelessly flirts with you: we all know it’s just to get a better tip, but we giggle and let ourselves feel special anyway. Every time I post a filtered-by-Instagram photo of myself, I’ll know deep down it’s to hide some level of insecurity. I’ll smile and be like “HEY, let’s pretend my skin really looked that clear today” –because Instagram is my flirty waiter and I like to feel special. OKAY? (Although if you look closely, you can sort of see the two pink dots on my cheek, as gifted by the lovely Lady of the Month.)

Funny how when I upload and meticulously edit all the photos I take on my digital SLR (in a sense, filtering them, just not at the push of a button like Instagram) it’s suddenly considered art…

Maybe editing through photoshop is like an off-the-clock waiter going out of his way to flirt with you: meaningful gratification.

That’s that! What’s your flirty waiter? Something you shamelessly do/accept when you know it’s really just kind of shallow? If you use Instagram, do you see it as your flirty waiter, or as something bigger and better that actually is meaningful? Let me know in the comments below!

When It Rains…

(the above photo is my absolute absolute absolute favorite)

When it rains in the summer, nothing makes me happier…but then the rain ends and you’re left with intense humidity. Not as fun. Leggings from Forever21, sweater from Old Navy, shoes from Forever Young Shoes.

Jewelry

I’m not a huge jewelry person. I usually don’t wear it at all. When I was younger, I wore the biggest, most flashy jewelry I could find. I’m glad I’m over that. Above is a set I bought from Charlotte Russe. Usually, their jewelry seems cheap to me, but I actually liked these pieces.

I have a couple more bracelets that I love so much, I just may get back into the habit of wearing jewelry again.

Chocolate Chip Butterscotch Cookies

WARNING: THESE ARE THE BEST BAKED GOODS I’VE EVER MADE EVER EVER.

You guys. Something amazing happened. THESE COOKIES TURNED OUT AWESOME!

It’s all thanks to Pinterest, really. One of the most wonderful ladies I work with brought these cookies and they were amazing. Today, when I decided to make cookies, I knew this was the only recipe for me.

In case you haven’t been following my blog, I really really really really can’t bake or cook, but especially bake. Usually everything is dry and overdone, EVEN IF I only bake them for like half the time they list.

I don’t know what it is. But these cookies turned out PERFECTLY. You know a recipe has got to be magical if even I can make them taste good.

Here’s a link to the pin. Below is the recipe with my modifications, the original of which comes from here:

Ingredients:
3/4 c. unsalted butter, softened
3/4 c. brown sugar
1/4 c. granulated sugar (I used 2 parts Splenda, 1 part real sugar! You couldn’t even tell!)
1 egg
2 tsp. vanilla extract
2 c. all purpose flour
2 tsp. cornstarch
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 c. semi-sweet chocolate chips, 1/2 c. butterscotch chips

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

2. She has a bunch of other directions listed on her website, but I didn’t pay attention to these while measuring out the ingredients, so I had everything all in one bowl before I realized I was apparently supposed to sort things and add them in at separate times. Haha, oops. BUT! They still turned out fabulous!! It’s like the recipe you can’t mess up!!

3. The cookies only apparently need 8-10 minutes! I put them in for 9 each and when I pulled them out, I was on the verge of tears because they looked completely under done. I trusted in the recipe though (she says absolutely no longer than 10 minutes) and after sitting for about 5 minutes once I took them out of the oven…they are PERFECT. I swear it. Can you tell I’m obsessed?

I wrapped up about six of them in a cup, then tied it off with a pink ribbon! The paper has a quote from John 13:35, and I blotted out the phone numbers. I love making cute crafts like these! I dropped them off at a house of a girl I go to church with and hopefully she (and you) loves this recipe as much as I do!

Balloons and Sparrows

I really like balloons, so when I came to work yesterday and had balloons waiting for me, I was all over them. As you can see by the new header. And the photos below. I even did my hair and nails and makeup all nice! Balloons are special, I’m telling you. The dress is from Forever21, shoes are from Forever Young Shoes. Hair I got from this tutorial on Pinterest (and modified it a little).
