Antelope Island, Utah

I still have a hard time comprehending what it means to live in the West! Born and raised and East Coast girl, I still feel like I’m in an alien world when I see the vegetation and landscapes common in Utah.

Saturday began the week-and-a-half family “staycation” with my mom, dad, sister + her hubby + nephew.

We went to Antelope Island. Yes, there is an island in Salt Lake. It’s giant, and there are free-roaming buffalo and antelope. Also is a ranch on the island, with historic stuff from the original family that lived there. I took a ton of photos, and here are the best ones:

The Photo Process

IMGP9784

I’ve decided to share how I go about picking the best out of the pictures that I take.

Rarely if ever have I gotten a fantastic photo on the first shot. The one above was the 13th I took in the set, however it was only two of 54 total shots that I actually liked. This is pretty average when I’m the one taking the photos of myself. When someone else takes them for me, I usually only have them take around 7-12 because I don’t want to be annoying. BUT, it usually pays off to have lots of photos when photographing people. It’s different for shooting landscapes because you can just take the time to set up a few shots exactly the way you want them and you won’t have “missed anything” in that time, unlike photographing changing subjects (like people).

So, okay: I’ve finished taking the shots. I slip the memory card in the photo slot and download the files. Then I go through the photos one by one, and there’s usually only 1-4 shots that I like. Then I edit and voila! For this particular shoot, there were only 3 that I liked enough to bother editing, then after that, only 2 of them that I still liked.

IMGP9778

Basically for this shoot:

  • took 53 pictures
  • edited 3
  • only liked 2

Which means less than 4% of the photos I actually took for this shot will ever end up being seen by people.

On average, I’d say that’s the usual per every 50 shots I take.

SO, when people comment on how great my pictures are and how awesome I look in them all the time and how impressive it is, I laugh because they don’t know how long it takes to get just one good shot and I had to go through dozens of pictures looking like the ones below before I got just one good one.

The Blue Blouse

Depth of field (or aperture) is important, because if you don’t pay attention to it–bad things can happen, like your nose being totally in focus while your eyes are not. Sad.

I got this shirt from Forever 21. I have to say, I totally love it. I would wear it more if I hadn’t already worn it around every separate group of friends I have.

Also, if I look tired in these photos, it’s because I had a sinus infection last week/this past weekend. I can’t hide my feels, guys.

Old Friends

This is my friend Sarah. I decided to put it in bold, because she sort of looks like me and I would be very offended if people commented saying, “Wow, Britt, you’re skinny now!”

If the thought crossed your mind, here’s what I have to say about that.

Sarah and I have known each other for around 12-15 years. I was 5 when I moved to the city we ended up both living in 1996. That’s a really long time to know someone and still be around each other.

Well, we reunited a while ago and–what else do I do with friends but take photos? So this is where we ended up! Click on the photos in the gallery below to make ‘em bigger.

Where My Time Is Spent (UVU Photos)

I’ve been such a slacker on my blog posting lately. I blame how much work I have for school. SO! Here are some photos of where I spend most of my time. I don’t have any more time, or I would explain some of the photos.

Canyon Trip

After classes, I had a moment of spontaneity and decided to drive through Provo Canyon all the way out to the other side. It was beautiful! I was hoping to see more fall colors, but what I did see was beautiful and the breeze alone was heavenly.

It was awesome to experience the beauty of summer ending and fall starting. Some of the places in that canyon look like they come straight out of a fairytale.

Check out the gallery below for more shots of my 2.5 hour drive!

I have reached a new level: Instagram

It all started with this photo.

I wear contacts. I lost a couple boxes of my contacts. I have avoided it as long as possible, but I am now out of contacts. Good thing I have this one pair of glasses.

I don’t usually wear glasses, I prefer to not wear glasses. They’re annoying and I like my sunglasses.

Now I don’t have a choice. …procrastination, children–this is where it gets you. I once went a whole month with glasses when I lived in California because of the same thing. I started dating a boy who only saw me with my glasses, so once I went back to normal, it freaked him out. My normal was his weird. …Weird.

On top of all this, it’s the first week of classes. Now everyone I meet is going to assume I always wear glasses and the day I show up without them, I guarantee at least a few people WON’T RECOGNIZE ME. It happens every time. I don’t know what it is, but for some reason, people really have a hard time recognizing people they don’t know very well if they go from glasses to non-glasses. I don’t understand it, but it’s going to be awkward to have people say, “oh, what’s you’re name?” and when I answer, they unfailingly go, “OH! I didn’t recognize you!”

“Yeah, it’s probably the glasses.”

“OH! Of course…that makes sense.”

Oh, does it? Please enlighten me.

So that happens.

I do like my glasses because the dark frames allow me to not have to worry as much about makeup, but if given a choice I will always opt for contacts.

So I took this photo on my way to class on Wednesday, because it’s rare that I wear my glasses, if you haven’t gathered. I was like, “AH! It’s not so bad! Maybe I’ll tweet about it.”

And then, something terrible happened. I couldn’t bring myself to post an unedited photo.

So I got Instagram.

HOW SAD IS THAT!? I only like you for your insta-filters, Instagram, but you know that, don’t you?! I think Instagram is like being flattered when your waiter shamelessly flirts with you: we all know it’s just to get a better tip, but we giggle and let ourselves feel special anyway. Every time I post a filtered-by-Instagram photo of myself, I’ll know deep down it’s to hide some level of insecurity. I’ll smile and be like “HEY, let’s pretend my skin really looked that clear today” –because Instagram is my flirty waiter and I like to feel special. OKAY? (Although if you look closely, you can sort of see the two pink dots on my cheek, as gifted by the lovely Lady of the Month.)

Funny how when I upload and meticulously edit all the photos I take on my digital SLR (in a sense, filtering them, just not at the push of a button like Instagram) it’s suddenly considered art…

Maybe editing through photoshop is like an off-the-clock waiter going out of his way to flirt with you: meaningful gratification.

That’s that! What’s your flirty waiter? Something you shamelessly do/accept when you know it’s really just kind of shallow? If you use Instagram, do you see it as your flirty waiter, or as something bigger and better that actually is meaningful? Let me know in the comments below!

Project Good

If anyone reading now read yesterday’s post (especially the comments), you’ll know that I completely planned on posting about what happened to me on Monday.

Yesterday, however, I was thinking about the situation and I felt really pathetic for continuing to let it weigh on my mind.

So I found this photo I took while I was living in California and added some things that I feel like would make a person happier:

Let’s be honest–the world has enough negativity without me adding to it.

Posting what I previously planned for today is just not worth it.

I don’t regret anything I’ve done to this point and I intend to keep it that way.

That’s why I’ve decided to start Project Good, where you do something good, then tell me how it inspired you (and the other person, if you know) and I post them once a week! Let’s take something bad and make something good. Everything posted will be anonymous, so don’t be shy!

Thanks for reading, I hope I’ve inspired at least one person today. Let’s all make an attempt to go out of our way for someone today. Send me a message or comment if you do! Have a fantastic week, I have some tutorials planned that I’m really excited about, so check back for new postings and don’t forget to like the new Lace Lollipops on Facebook!

Juicy Week Review

Let’s hear about the past week, in order of excitement:

  1. Engine in my car died
  2. Sushi with Katrin to talk about a super super exciting new project we’re starting
  3. I got fired from my job
  4. Created a Facebook Page for Lace Lollipops
  5. Have a new blog theme (I love it)
  6. Nephew started crawling
  7. No progress accomplished for my final paper in English…sadface

Quite a juicy week I’ve had. I am planning on selling my car and buying a new one. Listen for the most exciting adventure I’ll ever embark upon this weekend. (!!! I’m so SO excited.) Please come back tomorrow or Thursday to hear my ever-so-detailed, “tell-all” of how I got fired (it’s really not something to miss).

And these photos below, for some reason I really like them. I think it’s because I was annoyed when I was taking them, so they don’t show the usual smiles. Going out of the usual is exciting.

The Rain Rolled In

I love it when it rains. I really miss it! That’s one of the things I loved living in North Carolina! The rainy season! So for those of you on the East Coast, enjoy it, while the rest of us Westerners (with the exception of maybe Washington and Oregon) have to put lotion on every five seconds.

Also, do I have a great backyard or WHAT?

Come back tomorrow for a very cute shoot where I experimented with emotions and how they translate on camera!

A Party Last Friday

Oh, it was a lovely party! We played games, got to know each other so well and BEST of all, no one cried! <3 It was a dream come true!

The cupcakes were a huge success, made by the darling Meg. Seriously–they were delicious! The straws were also donated by her. Everyone kept commenting “those are the straws you see on Pinterest!”

I thought that was funny–it’s like the Internet in real LIFE!

There were virgin Pina Coladas and Strawberry Daqueries! It was delicious! We also burned strawberry shortcake scented candles. It smelled heavenly in that apartment!

This was almost every single girl that came! We had a few more that came later. This was the most girls at one time that we had, though! The best part was the photo booth that we did! Those are my favorite shots!

Enjoy! This was seriously tons of fun! These girls were awesome!

A Little Fun

So, um. I’m doing a photo booth on Friday for this party aaaaand I wanted to make sure my camera still worked.

That’s a lie. It’s just fun to take pictures of myself.

Plus, it helps you to take pictures of other people better! I swear, it does.

BUT, the photo booth is going to be so awesome. So is the party.

A Photo Shoot

I did a lovely photo shoot with the even lovelier Alexis last week. It turned out wonderfully! She was really fun to shoot with. Thanks to her for giving me the opportunity to do something I really enjoy!
