Shellac Again

Got shellac on my nails again. I haven’t had it in so long that I forgot how much better it looks than real polish (at least when I do my own nails). It’s shiny, and the best part is that it doesn’t chip. Chipping is so annoying, especially when you pay to get your nails done. So far, I’ve dropped a heavy ceramic dish on my nail, scraped it against a textured wall and they’re still perfect. I was even cutting a piece of paper and the scissors came down on my nail and not even a scratch. It’s amazing and so so so worth it.

The only thing I would recommend beforehand is to make sure you love the color. I usually get red or super light pink, a la Emily Maynard, but this time I decided to go a little wild. So far, so good! It’s been three days and I still love it.

We’ll see if I let them grow out, or if I decide I hate it.

Valentine’s Day Nails

I had shellac on my nails over the past few weeks–and since the polish was dark, it was super noticeable when my nails started to grow. Instead of trying to remove it myself (which you can do by filing of the top layer, then soaking in acetone for a while, then filing more and more off as you alternate soaking), I just went and had a salon remove it. They also filed my nails nicely and removed my cuticles (which is the best part).

Like I said, the color I had for almost a month was dark, so this time I decided I’d go for a lighter color. What better than Essie’s Ballet Slippers that my amazing sister got me for Christmas? I saw this tutorial on Pinterest and just knew it’d be my next project. Since I’m not super talented, I decided to only do the heart on one hand. Surprisingly, it looks really cool like that. I also like how the heart is facing me.

Fun fact: did you know the Egyptians (and other people) used to believe that there was a vein running directly from the ring finger to the heart–and that’s why we put rings on that finger? We now know that’s not true, but the symbolism is beautiful!

Shellac Again

I couldn’t resist, I had to get my nails done with shellac again. It’s just too convenient! I’m telling you! I am seriously contemplating buying my own stuff to do it myself!

Although it was quite an adventure getting these done, I ended up 45 minutes away from where I live, got called a liar, almost suffocated from fumes–but got free chocolate (which is really all that counts for anything).

Animal Print Nails

I love this style. I took the inspiration from this pin on Pinterest. My nails weren’t quite as long, but I think I did a pretty good job of making it look cool. It’s actually a lot easier than it looks! The three colors I used were Essie’s Funky Limelight, Rimmel London 521 Dazzle and a black nail art pen from Charlotte Russe.

5 Steps:

  1. Paint base color
  2. Add gold dots
  3. Use nail art brush to draw sort of like parentheses around the dots
  4. Add some dots in black
  5. Top coat (after it dries)

See? One of the easiest tutorials ever! I did the thumb and ring finger as accent nails.

Gel Nails (Shellac)

This is a lovely pink-red color I got done on Monday. It’s supposed to last about three weeks to a month. I really like the polish! It hasn’t chipped, it’s really shiny (as you can see). Usually that shine doesn’t last for very long after the top coat is applied, but it’s been two days and the nails look wet! It’s great.

I think it’s a great way to go get your nails done. I paid about $30. I will probably get them done again. The only thing is that it doesn’t give as much versatility with color. I tried to pick something I wouldn’t get tired of and that wouldn’t be too hard to match with.

Because I generally like my nail polish to match or at least go with my outfits.

Nude & Purple Nails

I just used scotch tape and Essie’s Play Date. I love the color! Last time I did half nude nails, I used one thin coat of OPI’s Samoan Sand, but this time I didn’t. It made it easier to get a clean line with the scotch tape because I didn’t have to press the tape against my skin a bunch to take the adhesive level down (so it doesn’t tear off the other paint).

Mauve & Pink Nails

I’ve always been a bit confused about what the color “mauve” is. According to Wikipedia (because they have an article on Mauve), it can be considered a dirty pink and a shade of purple. Apparently, this particular mauve is a “mauve taupe” color.

By the way, I always thought mauve was pronounced “mahv,” but it’s a french word, so it’s actually pronounced “mohv,” like rhymes with “grove.” Silly French!

The pink on the outside is my Tropical Fiesta from Milani. I just used scotch tape. Did them at work, what’s new.

So, there you have it, a lesson on the color mauve and an interesting color combo for Spring/Summer nails. You like?
