Like an Animal

Animal Tank

I usually don’t wear animal prints, because I attach this stigma to them that says “cheap,” and other things that just generally surround the opposite of “classy.”

I’ve decided, though…who cares? Go a little wild, go a little crazy.

Do the things that you want to do and just be free!

I say this because recently I did something adventurous and fun and then I felt guilty for it…even though I didn’t do a single thing worth feeling guilty over. I realized that my childhood/teenage restrictions of “NOT ALLOWED” still grip me sometimes. And that made me mad!

I really wish I didn’t let the fear of “not allowed” (whether by society, or personal inhibitions) keep me from doing all the fun stuff I could be doing. So I’ve vowed to change that, because we simply just don’t know how much time we have left–and I’m tired of being so careful! Even when I did my one adventurous act of packing everything I own in the back of my car and moving to California by myself…I still was so careful. I just need to relax and enjoy life, and worry less.

Famliy means Christmas

She was Red

As the Christmas season nears, I’ve realized a few things: most of them being that family is really awesome. Also, that I really like to look as pale as possible in photos for some reason.

Anyway, I sprained my ankle on Tuesday. It was terrible and one of the most painful things ever and I thought it was broken and I’d have to amputate. I knew I was being a bit dramatic (who, ME?) and I especially felt bad because I’m the only female in my immediate family that doesn’t just look at some stairs wrong and end up with broken/torn things.

At first, my sister pointed and laughed (like any good sister), then came and helped me do the one-foot-hop into the house. I had managed to hold it together until then, when I just started crying. She apologized and brought me a couple mini-snickers.

As I mentioned before, I’m not used to needing help, so my pride was definitely tried (RHYME) as I had to ask for a glass of water, some ibuprofen, a pair of sweatpants instead of my snow-soaked leggings, and a pair of slippers. I don’t know what I thought they would do, but I was so surprised when they responded with “of courses” and “don’t worry, we’ll take care of its” and eagerly helped. Not only that, but since all the women in my family have back, knee, ankle, neck, etc.problems but me (and my dad was at work), my brother-in-law was chosen to help me back down our porch stairs to the car. He came and picked me right up, without hesitation, and carried me to the car. He also took me out for pancakes on Monday. He also teases me a lot. He’s the brother I never had!

On the way to the Urgent Care, the pain subsided, but my mom told me that sometimes sprains hurt worse than breaks. I said I thought it was fine, although now I couldn’t go running for a week or so.

A week? She laughed. If it’s broken or the ligaments are torn, try SIX weeks! I about fainted! The semester starts in only 3 weeks! I laid my chair back and was silent until we arrived.

The nurse said “sometimes sprains hurt worse than breaks,” then made me WALK by mySELF to the X-Ray. Then the other nurse was helping me move my foot on that little X-Ray table and I commented how glad I was that I shaved my legs, but I wish I’d have painted my toenails. But, I said, you probably don’t care about whether my legs are shaved. She laughed and said, “there are much worse things than unshaven legs. There was a time I didn’t think that.” She then burst into a fit of giggles. I was giggling too, but I don’t think about the same thing.

To ruin all the dramatic buildup, the doctor said my ankle’s just a bad sprain (he went “oooh” when he saw how much it had swelled. So did the nurse! Way to make me feel self-conscious!) and said, according to my x-rays, I have “excellent joint space” in my feet and I should be fine after a few days.

I felt kind of silly for making it a big deal, but the last time I hurt myself, I was like 4 years old. 15 years ago. I couldn’t comprehend for a while the feeling of something hurting and the hurt not going away after a couple minutes. I didn’t realize how lucky I am to be blessed with such a healthy, strong body. I also didn’t realize how lucky I am to be around people that are totally willing to help with my problems. Maybe I should utilize that more.

Obviously, this would’ve been much harder without the overwhelmingly loving help my family gave me and I am SO excited to be with everyone for Christmas this year!

Fall 2012

I love all seasons, but I have to say, I think Fall-time gets the most attention from me. Even though it snowed this morning, but the mid-afternoon it all melted and I was determined to get some photos before the colors all turned to brown.

I have been a bad blogger lately, but I’m determined to change it.

In good news, I might be going to 80 degree Vegas this weekend to celebrate Katrin’s 21st! And I get to be very artsy in one of my classes right now.

I also saw three people I haven’t seen in over a year at school this week. Two I enthusiastically said hello to, one I avoided like the plague.

Halloween and Thanksgiving are almost upon us. I am so excited for the holiday season!

Hey, thanks to all of you who read these posts. It really means a lot to me.

Old Friends

This is my friend Sarah. I decided to put it in bold, because she sort of looks like me and I would be very offended if people commented saying, “Wow, Britt, you’re skinny now!”

If the thought crossed your mind, here’s what I have to say about that.

Sarah and I have known each other for around 12-15 years. I was 5 when I moved to the city we ended up both living in 1996. That’s a really long time to know someone and still be around each other.

Well, we reunited a while ago and–what else do I do with friends but take photos? So this is where we ended up! Click on the photos in the gallery below to make ‘em bigger.

Happy Fall Equinox

I usually don’t post on Saturdays, but today is the start of fall–and well, I have to celebrate in my most fall outfit. The “Stanford” sweater is actually vintage! It belonged to my mom in the 80′s. The lace0side leggings (I don’t get to wear these nearly enough, btw) are from Papaya. The cute collared hearts piece was supposed to be a dress–but it totally shrank. Yes, again with my ELF Cheerful Cherry lipstick. It really is my fall favorite.

Even though the Fall Equinox is today, I don’t feel like fall has really set in. It’s definitely starting to creep around the corner, but I’m still holding out for 60 and 70 degree temps. Enough of this heat already! (But don’t come for a while, Winter.)

But, regardless of if we like it, the seasons are changing. Whether you pronounce it “Ee-quinox” or “Eh-quinox,” let’s remember to come together at this Season of Thankfulness–and let’s just all get along, okay?!

Retro-Inspired with a Special Guest

This is just further proof that I belong in skirts and dresses and not in jeans. I just don’t like jeans, okay? Also, it’s nice to break out the lipstick every now and then. The type I’m wearing in these photos is ELF’s Cheerful Cherry. It’s fantastic. I really like it, especially for fall season coming up.

And THEN, who came out to join me for pictures?

My sister has the cutest baby! He got shots today, but still managed to crack a couple smiles.

Oh babies. I love them when I can give them back.

Off to take photos of my sister and her baby! Perhaps I’ll put those up tomorrow.

A Silly Hat

Because these were cool for a while. And my sister has one. And I couldn’t find anything else worth wearing for my fashion post this week. So yeah.

Happy Leap Year! Leave a comment: animal hats–in or no?
