A Hair Trick

IMGP9932

I learned a new and nifty trick for curling hair with a flat iron: the more hair you use for each curl results in bigger curls. If that’s not any news to you, then forgive me for just learning about this and being so out of touch. AND HERE I WAS, about to buy one of those super wide irons. Don’t even need one. Tricks of the trade, my friends.

Also, would you like a list of things that make me feel bad about myself/motivate me, complete with PICTURES? Look no further than the Health & Fitness section of Pinterest.

Let’s play “what’s my new favorite accessory”

New Hipster Frames

These finally came today. Thank you, universe. Even though I feel like I’m looking through a fishbowl (therefore contacts will remain my #1 choice), I have a feeling I might wear glasses a lot more than usual. Also shout out to my just figuring out the whole “sock-bun” thing. I don’t know if I don’t use a long enough sock for my hair, or what, but I feel like it always comes out looking like a messy wrap bun–never nice and neat like Pinterest says. And now, what is possibly my favorite photo of me ever:

big frame hipster glasses with high bun

Join the hipster craze. Buy some big ol’ frames. These frames are Guess. And here’s to a fantastic week! Love you (yes, you).

Service helps the heart

sparrow dress v2

Sometimes it feels so silly putting these photos up and saying “this is what I wore today,” but I’ve been doing it for a year and a half, so I guess why stop now? Plus I totally love that sweater I’m wearing and I wanted to wear the shoes, so this is what I came up with. I also did those loose braids, which I haven’t done in years. Also I haven’t worn this dress in forever. The weather was around 32 degrees F today, so of course it felt like springtime and I just had to wear something a little lighter than usual.

Something great happened to me yesterday afternoon, and I wanted to share:

I am a worrier and a chronic over-thinker and sometimes I create entire problems that don’t exist with people I know. Even though I’m aware that it’s probably just made up in my head, I can’t forget about it when I’m around that person and tend to treat them accordingly. Anyway, I decided to get over the perceived injustices and participate in an activity at which said person would be present. At first, it was a little bit hard on the heart (it usually is when you want to dislike someone you know you shouldn’t), but I ended up realizing that I really don’t care about my imaginary problem and finally managed to get over it.

As you may suppose, I felt way better.

THEN, I was driving home from said activity and as I was nearing my neighborhood, a song I really like came on the radio. I was feeling awfully good about myself and the song was helping, so instead of turning onto my street, I decided to turn around and go to the store across the street to buy some Oreos and take them to my mom (since she had mentioned wanting some).

WELL, I was about to have two good-deeds done (sucking up my issues and being kind PLUS Oreos for my mother), when I pulled into a parking spot and a lady came up to me and asked me if I had jumper cables. I did of course (usually my car’s the one that needs them) and let her use both them and my battery to help start their little yellow bug.

I didn’t feel like it was anything special–I mean, I didn’t even do anything! They just had me stay in the the car while one of the men there did most of the work. Afterward, I was about to walk into the store when the woman came up to me and said how much she appreciated what I did for them. The girls with her all chorused in agreement. I was so surprised! I just felt like it was what anyone one do, and I was so happy to help (helping others really does give you a high)–but their gratitude made it so much better.

And then she shook my hand and handed me a folded bill, insisted I take it and hurried me off. When I went into the store, I looked and realized she gave me $20. Twenty dollars! When I came back out, they were gone and I was left with two packs of double-stuffed Oreos (one for me and for my mom), $20 and some serious warmfuzzies (best part)–none of which would have happened if I hadn’t finally decided to suck up my self-pity in the first place.

Feels good.

My Sister

IMGP4786

This is my sister, and this is her adorable outfit, made entirely of Christmas presents!! You can’t really tell in this picture, but her boots are Steve Madden, super cute leather. Clearly her husband is a winner. Clearly she is the stylish one in the family.

Also, check out that snow! My sister’s birthday is on Christmas Eve, and this year was one of only a few times it’s ever snowed on her birthday in her life! It snowed on Christmas Day, too! And the next day–and today! It’s been a snowy season! It’s fun to take pictures in and look at, but driving in snow is one of the most stressful things of all time ever.

I hate driving in snow.

I think I might be living in the wrong state. Maybe I’ll do law school in California.

A girl can dream.

Famliy means Christmas

She was Red

As the Christmas season nears, I’ve realized a few things: most of them being that family is really awesome. Also, that I really like to look as pale as possible in photos for some reason.

Anyway, I sprained my ankle on Tuesday. It was terrible and one of the most painful things ever and I thought it was broken and I’d have to amputate. I knew I was being a bit dramatic (who, ME?) and I especially felt bad because I’m the only female in my immediate family that doesn’t just look at some stairs wrong and end up with broken/torn things.

At first, my sister pointed and laughed (like any good sister), then came and helped me do the one-foot-hop into the house. I had managed to hold it together until then, when I just started crying. She apologized and brought me a couple mini-snickers.

As I mentioned before, I’m not used to needing help, so my pride was definitely tried (RHYME) as I had to ask for a glass of water, some ibuprofen, a pair of sweatpants instead of my snow-soaked leggings, and a pair of slippers. I don’t know what I thought they would do, but I was so surprised when they responded with “of courses” and “don’t worry, we’ll take care of its” and eagerly helped. Not only that, but since all the women in my family have back, knee, ankle, neck, etc.problems but me (and my dad was at work), my brother-in-law was chosen to help me back down our porch stairs to the car. He came and picked me right up, without hesitation, and carried me to the car. He also took me out for pancakes on Monday. He also teases me a lot. He’s the brother I never had!

On the way to the Urgent Care, the pain subsided, but my mom told me that sometimes sprains hurt worse than breaks. I said I thought it was fine, although now I couldn’t go running for a week or so.

A week? She laughed. If it’s broken or the ligaments are torn, try SIX weeks! I about fainted! The semester starts in only 3 weeks! I laid my chair back and was silent until we arrived.

The nurse said “sometimes sprains hurt worse than breaks,” then made me WALK by mySELF to the X-Ray. Then the other nurse was helping me move my foot on that little X-Ray table and I commented how glad I was that I shaved my legs, but I wish I’d have painted my toenails. But, I said, you probably don’t care about whether my legs are shaved. She laughed and said, “there are much worse things than unshaven legs. There was a time I didn’t think that.” She then burst into a fit of giggles. I was giggling too, but I don’t think about the same thing.

To ruin all the dramatic buildup, the doctor said my ankle’s just a bad sprain (he went “oooh” when he saw how much it had swelled. So did the nurse! Way to make me feel self-conscious!) and said, according to my x-rays, I have “excellent joint space” in my feet and I should be fine after a few days.

I felt kind of silly for making it a big deal, but the last time I hurt myself, I was like 4 years old. 15 years ago. I couldn’t comprehend for a while the feeling of something hurting and the hurt not going away after a couple minutes. I didn’t realize how lucky I am to be blessed with such a healthy, strong body. I also didn’t realize how lucky I am to be around people that are totally willing to help with my problems. Maybe I should utilize that more.

Obviously, this would’ve been much harder without the overwhelmingly loving help my family gave me and I am SO excited to be with everyone for Christmas this year!

Fall 2012

I love all seasons, but I have to say, I think Fall-time gets the most attention from me. Even though it snowed this morning, but the mid-afternoon it all melted and I was determined to get some photos before the colors all turned to brown.

I have been a bad blogger lately, but I’m determined to change it.

In good news, I might be going to 80 degree Vegas this weekend to celebrate Katrin’s 21st! And I get to be very artsy in one of my classes right now.

I also saw three people I haven’t seen in over a year at school this week. Two I enthusiastically said hello to, one I avoided like the plague.

Halloween and Thanksgiving are almost upon us. I am so excited for the holiday season!

Hey, thanks to all of you who read these posts. It really means a lot to me.

Twice Baked Cheddar Broccoli Potatoes

Ingredients

6 medium to small potatoes
1 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1/4 cup milk
1 cup finely chopped broccoli florets
Salt & pepper to taste
**Sour cream & butter for topping**

Instructions

Bake the potatoes at 400 degrees F for 50 minutes
Slice in half, long ways
Carefully scoop out the middle and put the skins on a baking sheet
Put the potato meat into a bowl
Mix other ingredients, really mash ‘em up well
Spoon back into skins
Bake at 400 degrees F for 15 more minutes
Serve with sour cream and butter

YUM – am I right? It was a great recipe, turned out pretty yummy! I have to say I probably won’t do it again very often, because you could just bake the potatoes and serve with the broccoli and cheese separately–and that would save like 20 minutes. But it is great for presentation!
