Shellac Again

IMGP1040

Got shellac on my nails again. I haven’t had it in so long that I forgot how much better it looks than real polish (at least when I do my own nails). It’s shiny, and the best part is that it doesn’t chip. Chipping is so annoying, especially when you pay to get your nails done. So far, I’ve dropped a heavy ceramic dish on my nail, scraped it against a textured wall and they’re still perfect. I was even cutting a piece of paper and the scissors came down on my nail and not even a scratch. It’s amazing and so so so worth it.

The only thing I would recommend beforehand is to make sure you love the color. I usually get red or super light pink, a la Emily Maynard, but this time I decided to go a little wild. So far, so good! It’s been three days and I still love it.

We’ll see if I let them grow out, or if I decide I hate it.

Now That Finals Are Done

IMGP9579

I will never take 17 credits again…but finally, my exams are all over! And I think that I did better than I thought I was going to.

Also, my new sleep schedule has turned me into an old lady: I used to go to bed around  midnight and wake up, well, whenever…but now I have to wake up by 6, so I go to bed by 10.

I have to say, though, I really like that I can enjoy the full days!

My new hobby: the travel section of Pinterest.

Boring Sunday update, but this week will be full of joyous, touristy posts since this is my week between Spring and Summer semesters and my family has decided to go everywhere.

Mostly, I just can’t wait to go to St. George this weekend!

More exciting + regular posts to come…

How to make your eyelashes look like falsies:

No mascara vs mascara

I don’t know about you guys, but I’ve pretty much always had a problem with false eyelashes. They are really difficult to put on right and the nice ones are pretty expensive. We all go through it. I had eyelash extensions at one point, and I thought they were fantastic, but looking back, they were pretty terrible and I REALIZED that my lashes are totally long enough on their own–I just wasn’t using them to their full, long & dark potential. SO, I give you my secret to making your eyelashes look like falsies:

MY METHOD—TOOLS:

  • 3 different types of mascaras. I know, I know, but this is how I do it. All in black, obviously.
    • Mascara A: with a wand that lengthens and defines (long, comb-like, evenly spaced bristles)
      • Not waterproof
      • Curved wand
    • Mascara B: with a wand that thickens and volumizes (round, tightly packed bristles)
      • Not waterproof
    • Mascara C: with a wand that shades and separates (round with short, rubber bristles)
      • Waterproof
  • Eyelash curler
  • Eyelash brush

MY METHOD—STEPS:

  1. Curl your lashes with the curler–put it as close to the base of your lashes as you can get without it hurting, then clamp and pulse 5 times, each side, upper lashes only.
  2. Apply the mascaras in the order listed above. This way, they basically get a base coat, the polish and the top coat (complete with waterproofing). Make sure to get all the lashes, especially the ones close to the inner eye. Rewet your brush for each eye per application.
    • Mascara A is applied to full lashes, helps solidify the curl you just did, since it’s a curved wand
    • Mascara B is applied to the full lashes, but more attention on the top half of upper lashes
    • Mascara C is combed through the full lashes
  3. Comb the lashes with the brush to get out and separate any clumps that your third mascara didn’t get.
  4. You now have rockin’ lashes.

MY METHOD—CLEAN UP:

With all that mascara it probably looks impossible to clean off, but it’s really not, especially the longer you leave it on. When it comes time to remove the eye makeup, I just use Dove soap bar (I freaking love their soap, it’s so hydrating) and a reusable exfoliating pad. I usually do it in the shower, so I don’t know if that makes a difference, but I have never had a problem. If I get out of the shower and still have mascara, I use a Q-tip with a little water to fix it. Easy-peasy.

MY METHOD—PRODUCTS:

Mascaras

Mascara A: Maybelline Cat Eyes; Mascara B: L’Oréal Extra Volume Collagen; Mascara C: Maybelline Rocket Volume; Regular brow & lash brush. The best part is that all these mascaras were on sale, and are really cheap–so you won’t have to spend as much money!

I do this about once a week, on Sundays, or when I go out/do performances/want to impress people. I’ve gotten asked if they’re false lashes before, and told numerous times how they just make my eyes “pop!” If you try it, let me know how it goes.

A Hair Trick

IMGP9932

I learned a new and nifty trick for curling hair with a flat iron: the more hair you use for each curl results in bigger curls. If that’s not any news to you, then forgive me for just learning about this and being so out of touch. AND HERE I WAS, about to buy one of those super wide irons. Don’t even need one. Tricks of the trade, my friends.

Also, would you like a list of things that make me feel bad about myself/motivate me, complete with PICTURES? Look no further than the Health & Fitness section of Pinterest.

Valentine’s Day Nails

valentine's day heart nails

I had shellac on my nails over the past few weeks–and since the polish was dark, it was super noticeable when my nails started to grow. Instead of trying to remove it myself (which you can do by filing of the top layer, then soaking in acetone for a while, then filing more and more off as you alternate soaking), I just went and had a salon remove it. They also filed my nails nicely and removed my cuticles (which is the best part).

Like I said, the color I had for almost a month was dark, so this time I decided I’d go for a lighter color. What better than Essie’s Ballet Slippers that my amazing sister got me for Christmas? I saw this tutorial on Pinterest and just knew it’d be my next project. Since I’m not super talented, I decided to only do the heart on one hand. Surprisingly, it looks really cool like that. I also like how the heart is facing me.

Fun fact: did you know the Egyptians (and other people) used to believe that there was a vein running directly from the ring finger to the heart–and that’s why we put rings on that finger? We now know that’s not true, but the symbolism is beautiful!

Let’s play “what’s my new favorite accessory”

New Hipster Frames

These finally came today. Thank you, universe. Even though I feel like I’m looking through a fishbowl (therefore contacts will remain my #1 choice), I have a feeling I might wear glasses a lot more than usual. Also shout out to my just figuring out the whole “sock-bun” thing. I don’t know if I don’t use a long enough sock for my hair, or what, but I feel like it always comes out looking like a messy wrap bun–never nice and neat like Pinterest says. And now, what is possibly my favorite photo of me ever:

big frame hipster glasses with high bun

Join the hipster craze. Buy some big ol’ frames. These frames are Guess. And here’s to a fantastic week! Love you (yes, you).

Famliy means Christmas

She was Red

As the Christmas season nears, I’ve realized a few things: most of them being that family is really awesome. Also, that I really like to look as pale as possible in photos for some reason.

Anyway, I sprained my ankle on Tuesday. It was terrible and one of the most painful things ever and I thought it was broken and I’d have to amputate. I knew I was being a bit dramatic (who, ME?) and I especially felt bad because I’m the only female in my immediate family that doesn’t just look at some stairs wrong and end up with broken/torn things.

At first, my sister pointed and laughed (like any good sister), then came and helped me do the one-foot-hop into the house. I had managed to hold it together until then, when I just started crying. She apologized and brought me a couple mini-snickers.

As I mentioned before, I’m not used to needing help, so my pride was definitely tried (RHYME) as I had to ask for a glass of water, some ibuprofen, a pair of sweatpants instead of my snow-soaked leggings, and a pair of slippers. I don’t know what I thought they would do, but I was so surprised when they responded with “of courses” and “don’t worry, we’ll take care of its” and eagerly helped. Not only that, but since all the women in my family have back, knee, ankle, neck, etc.problems but me (and my dad was at work), my brother-in-law was chosen to help me back down our porch stairs to the car. He came and picked me right up, without hesitation, and carried me to the car. He also took me out for pancakes on Monday. He also teases me a lot. He’s the brother I never had!

On the way to the Urgent Care, the pain subsided, but my mom told me that sometimes sprains hurt worse than breaks. I said I thought it was fine, although now I couldn’t go running for a week or so.

A week? She laughed. If it’s broken or the ligaments are torn, try SIX weeks! I about fainted! The semester starts in only 3 weeks! I laid my chair back and was silent until we arrived.

The nurse said “sometimes sprains hurt worse than breaks,” then made me WALK by mySELF to the X-Ray. Then the other nurse was helping me move my foot on that little X-Ray table and I commented how glad I was that I shaved my legs, but I wish I’d have painted my toenails. But, I said, you probably don’t care about whether my legs are shaved. She laughed and said, “there are much worse things than unshaven legs. There was a time I didn’t think that.” She then burst into a fit of giggles. I was giggling too, but I don’t think about the same thing.

To ruin all the dramatic buildup, the doctor said my ankle’s just a bad sprain (he went “oooh” when he saw how much it had swelled. So did the nurse! Way to make me feel self-conscious!) and said, according to my x-rays, I have “excellent joint space” in my feet and I should be fine after a few days.

I felt kind of silly for making it a big deal, but the last time I hurt myself, I was like 4 years old. 15 years ago. I couldn’t comprehend for a while the feeling of something hurting and the hurt not going away after a couple minutes. I didn’t realize how lucky I am to be blessed with such a healthy, strong body. I also didn’t realize how lucky I am to be around people that are totally willing to help with my problems. Maybe I should utilize that more.

Obviously, this would’ve been much harder without the overwhelmingly loving help my family gave me and I am SO excited to be with everyone for Christmas this year!
