I Wrote A Play

One of our assignments in my theater class was to write a ten minute play, then towards the end of the semester, we’d choose a few to produce and perform. Just so happens that mine was one of 8 produced, and will be performed next Tuesday! It’s part of our final, so unfortunately, it’s going to be performed around 9:30am and not really open to the public.

But I’m totally going to record it and upload it.

Until then, here is our group program design:

Theater Photos1-002

And here are a few photos that didn’t make it, but were too cute to delete (the one with the random guy is our director, haha):

Social Change

I just recently got accepted to present at the Utah Valley University Conference on Writing for Social Change. I’m really excited, because it means I can present my paper on feminism to some people and maybe inspire social change. That’s kind of a big deal.

Also, I am doing something else really exciting. Getting all A’s. In all 6 of my classes. The semester is about only halfway done, so we’ll see where it goes, but it’s amazing how much more motivated I am to be successful in school after a) taking a year off and b) having figured out what I want to do with my life.

The last thing that’s going on in my life that is keeping me from being a very good blogger is that I have been rehearsing and practicing to accompany the BYU contemporary dancers. I got this amazing opportunity from one of the most musically apt people I know from Church. He randomly presented me with this chance, and I’ve totally been bitten by the performance bug. I just love it. We did our first performance today and it went really well. It felt amazing to sing with such a talented person and to a magical guitarist, then knowing two people were dancing to something that I was helping to create–was amazing.

I have a lot going on right now, personally and with school, but I’m encouraged by the inspiring messages of those around me. I am so lucky and grateful for the opportunities I get to spend my life in such uplifting circumstances. I am growing in ways I never thought possible–and it’s not even because of the Halloween candy!

Fall 2012

I love all seasons, but I have to say, I think Fall-time gets the most attention from me. Even though it snowed this morning, but the mid-afternoon it all melted and I was determined to get some photos before the colors all turned to brown.

I have been a bad blogger lately, but I’m determined to change it.

In good news, I might be going to 80 degree Vegas this weekend to celebrate Katrin’s 21st! And I get to be very artsy in one of my classes right now.

I also saw three people I haven’t seen in over a year at school this week. Two I enthusiastically said hello to, one I avoided like the plague.

Halloween and Thanksgiving are almost upon us. I am so excited for the holiday season!

Hey, thanks to all of you who read these posts. It really means a lot to me.

Ms Lace Lollipops October

My name is Tinesha. I am from Washington State. I love the rain, foreign films, smoothies, and public speaking. I am studying Sociology and Women’s Studies and I speak French.

Ever since I was very young, I wanted to do big things with my life. Of course, when I was young, my plans changed constantly – I wanted to own a business, be the president, and then be a chef. I believed I could do anything I put my mind to.

By the time I went to middle school, my perspective changed. Desperate to fit and be like others, I tried to forget who I was. I was bi-racial – my mother is Caucasian and my father is African – and was slightly ashamed because I just didn’t fit in. I had a weird name. My feminist ideals were silenced for fear of backlash. I started buying clothes I didn’t even like and flaunting brands that I didn’t even want to be in because it was ‘cool’. They told me to be myself and I just wanted to be popular.

A few years later, I found myself suddenly feeling tired. Pretending to be someone else is tiring. That whole “be yourself” thing, well, it made sense. So I did. I joined community organizations that advocated for youth voices because I loved it. I embraced my culture. I listened to music I liked and found myself. I talked about things that were important to me and people listened. I was a community member; I was an activist.

I am now a sophomore at Brigham Young University. At first, I was a little intimidated. I knew I was different – I felt like the only Democrat, the only feminist, the only person who was, well, different. Of course, I’m not the only one, but I am different. It’s not always easy, but I found that being different makes me stronger and it makes others stronger. I don’t apologize for who I am. In a few months, I will serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and then I plan to go to law school and study international human rights law. I will continue being me, and I will continue speaking out for what I believe in – even when it’s not easy. I didn’t get this far by being someone else or staying quiet.

Not everyone agrees with what I believe. Not everyone likes me. But I’ve learned that doesn’t matter. If I work hard and am kind and I like me, that’s what matters.

As Charlotte Bronte writes in Jane Eyre, “I am no bird and no net ensnares me. I am a free human being with an independent will.”

To My Cousins

Watch in HD!

To my lovely cousin Brandon–and my soon-to-be cousin-in-law–I love you both so much and I’m so glad I had the opportunity to take your photos! I can’t wait for the wedding. You two are beautiful people, inside and out.

How I Make Clothing Choices

As it turns out, I can’t make wise outfit choices. I keep leaving the house in what I believe is “October Appropriate Wear,” only to be dying of heatstroke by the time I’m walking to my car after classes. I think I may have figured it out though. Wear jeans, shoes that aren’t boots–but not sandals, a thin shirt with a light jacket. That  way, I’m only a little cold when I leave in the mornings and only a little hot when I leave in the afternoons. WIN-WIN. Just gotta keep a slight feeling of discomfort always and then all my discomfort will only be slight.

Or something.

The Blue Blouse

Depth of field (or aperture) is important, because if you don’t pay attention to it–bad things can happen, like your nose being totally in focus while your eyes are not. Sad.

I got this shirt from Forever 21. I have to say, I totally love it. I would wear it more if I hadn’t already worn it around every separate group of friends I have.

Also, if I look tired in these photos, it’s because I had a sinus infection last week/this past weekend. I can’t hide my feels, guys.
