Eyes

Before we start, everyone go to this website:

http://paronsuren.1x.com/gallery/5569

Now pick your jaw back up off the floor. We can continue.

I’ve always had a fascination with eyes. I saw these photographs and it honestly freaked me out a little at first, because, honestly–did you know our eyes look like different planets and oceans and such!?

And our pupils are just dark holes going in the back of our heads. They’re holes. If there wasn’t the iris (the colored part), we would all have holes for eyes. And also be nocturnal, probably.

It’s creepy in a wonderfully fantastic way.

Let’s talk eye shadow, now that we’ve had our optical lesson:

With green eyes (although, I’m not really sure that’s what color they are), I like to wear three different shades of eye shadow to make them pop–brown, dark purple and green. Blues and light pastel colors are what I wear if I have statement lipstick. Check out the following:

I like this green because it’s a golden-green, which works really well for me since I have gold in my eyes.

And there’s the brown–I think it pulls out the grey-ish color in my eyes.

I don’t know. I don’t know what color they are. According to this color palette generator, my eyes are basically shades of grey tinted with greens and blues. The X’s represent the outsides of my eyes that aren’t included in the iris. The original photo I used was a cropped version of the super close up I posted as the 2nd picture. So these are the colors from the bottom half of my iris.

Time is Money

Congratulations to Maria for a huge success on her first post yesterday! Haven’t seen it?! Well, go read her fantastic post on a pair of $396 shoes that she made for $13! I couldn’t tell the difference, seriously.

Who’s Maria? Oh. Wait, who are YOU? Oh. But what even is this blog?

Would you like a drink from my invisible water cup?

Shoes by Forever Young Shoes (similar), the skirt I don’t know (but here’s something similar), shirt from Forever 21. I literally just bought this shirt on Saturday and I can’t find it anywhere on their website. Forever 21 is a nightmare sometimes. Earrings from Charlotte Russe (similar). Lipstick from Forever 21 (in Rose). More on the lipstick and some fake eyelashes I bought tomorrow.

I went to see “In Time” this weekend and I loved it. It was really cleverly done. Plus, Justin Timberlake, so…yeah. Best movie.

We’ve all heard the phrase “time is money.” It’s true–if you look at life as being one huge opportunity to make money. If that’s your reasoning, then yeah, any time that you’re spending doing something other than working (gaining money) can be seen as a monetary loss instead.

That seems like a really depressing way to look at the world. Those must be grumpy people, always thinking their literally paying attention, paying thanks,  paying compliments and paying respect.

Although I do believe that our time should be well-spent, I also think it’s important to look at the world through unselfish eyes. I’d be willing to bet that if any of you chose to look at the world with the mentality of “what can I give people” instead of “everyone owes me,” you would find yourself much happier.

Or maybe I’ve been following the Dalai Lama on Twitter for too long…

November’s almost over! Make it count!

More photos from the shoot, including my three favorites (the last 3):

Introducing Monday with Maria!

Hi Lollies, meet Maria! She and I went to high school together, but she’s also extremely talented and very creative. Bookmark us now, because Maria will be giving us our weekly dose of “Do It Yourself” (perfect for the Holiday season) all the way from Florida as a permanent contributor to Lace Lollipops!

What girl doesn’t like a nice pair of flats that go with everything and that are comfortable too? It was Coco Chanel that said every girl should be classy and fabulous. But at what price should that be? I think every girl should be classy and fabulous without having to pay hundreds of dollars for it! I hate it when I find a cute piece on the runway and it’s hundreds or even thousands of dollars! What makes me even more frustrated is when I try to find it at a cheaper price and it’s nowhere to be found. That’s when I figured that I could just make things myself! I mean who knows you better than you?! Do-it-yourself projects let you be hands-on with your fashion and let you be creative by implementing what you like into what you’re going to wear.

I have always loved Chanel, but on a college student budget, I could never afford something so expensive, even a pair of flats. These retail for about $396.00 and even replicas cost $132.00! That’s my gas money for almost 2 months! However, I found a way to get shoes like these for almost next to nothing: I made them for under $15!

The first thing you need is a black pair of flats. You can buy some, or if you want to spruce up a plain black pair you already have, that works even better!

I got these from Walmart and they were only $7.00!

Then you’ll need white ribbon and some sort of decorative pendant, like the signature Chanel sign.

The most tedious task is making the bows. The easiest way I found is after you cut the ribbon as long as you want, staple it in the middle to make 2 loops. Like the shoes, the ones I made have 6 loops. Then, once you have the loops in place, put another strand of ribbon across all of the loops to tie them together.

Tie the back of the piece of ribbon and secure the knot with glue.

You can use a glue gun, but I am using Krazy Glue.

The pendant that I’m using is actually a button. I cut the back off and then glued it to the middle loop of the bow toward the outside, just like the Chanel shoes.

Then secure both bows on the shoes.

I got all of my supplies at Walmart.

Shoes: $7.00

Ribbon: $1.97

Buttons: $1.32

Krazy Glue: $2.57

So for a total of $12.86, you can get a fabulous new pair of flats!

Happy Thanksgiving and Hair

Happy Thanksgiving!

I’m so excited to go get some food…I haven’t eaten anything all day in preparation. I wasn’t able to go home and visit my family this year because of my work schedule, but I’m lucky enough to have people in the area who I can go eat with!

While I was getting ready, I decided to take photos of my hair in all it’s stages: first, wet and un-brushed; second, brushed and blow dried; third, styled!

I love braided bangs. Super cute. Decided to dress mostly casual, but I didn’t want to go too casual, so I added the jacket (from Charlotte Russe) and boots (from Old Navy.) Hopefully everyone else is dressed informally, too. It might be awkward. I’ll keep you updated. I’m going to be late, though, so sorry if this post is rushed!

Ugh, I hate jeans. More on that later. Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Count Your Blessings

Wow, a big thank you to everyone who looked at the blog yesterday! I had the highest views in one day since I started the blog back in August. Thank you!

Shirt (similar) and shoes (similar) from Kohl’s, leggings from Forever 21, sunglasses from Charlotte Russe.

Still not feeling too great today. It feels like I have a permanent case of the sads.

Here are ten reasons (in no particular order) why I shouldn’t be sad in hopes that my heart catches up with my brain:

1. Music is wonderful, and I’m lucky to be talented in it

2. I have two parents who love me more than anything

3. I have somewhere to go on Thanksgiving

4. I’m only 20 years old! I have my whole life ahead of me with endless possibilities

5. I have a clear conscience

6. I have had the privilege of learning from so many great teachers

7. I know that in the grand scheme of things, the past mistakes and hard times I’ve had will be a forgotten, distant memory compared to all the wonderful things I will do and accomplish in the next 60 years

8. I can find joy in so many things in life, like art, music and language, to name a few

9. I have confidence in a supreme purpose and meaning to life

10. I have never been more aware of the multitude of people who truly do wish the best for me, and I won’t let the one or two people who don’t, blind me from all my blessings.

One Of Those Days

Happy Birthday to my wonderful, amazing, spectacular DAD!!

You know those days when you wake up and everything just kind of sucks? Like when you get into a fight or something bad happens the night before–you just wake up and as it all comes rushing back to you, you wish you never would’ve opened your eyes and you wonder how you ever fell asleep in the first place?

That’s how I feel today. Today is a day that I could easily never get out from under the covers and just sit and stew in my own depressing thoughts and cry and be miserable. It’s practically all I did yesterday.

I feel like that’d be easier than getting up and trying to be productive. I wonder why it’s so much easier to just wallow than it is to get up and shower and get dressed and stuff.

Well, I don’t know for sure, but in my limited experience, I’ve noticed that the things worth having are the things you have to try the hardest to achieve.

Like happiness. Or freedom.

Luckily, I have an awesome family and awesome friends who have shown me that it’s on these days when it’s the most important to get up, get ready and be productive.

“Hope is the thing with feathers that perches on the soul–and sings the tune without the words and never stops at all.” a couple lines of poetry from Hope by Emily Dickinson.

Dress from a boutique in Utah, shoes from Forever 21.

I actually love the shoot I did for this post. Check out the rest in the gallery below:

The Most Favorite Snack

This is a reminder of our In The Mirror Project going on! You have until Monday, November 21st to submit! Visit the Projects Tab at the top of the site for all the info!!

Grape halves with little cubes of cheese is really delicious! I love the sweet and salty mixture.

Mmmm!! Seriously one of the greatest snacks. If you eat as much of it as I do, it turns into a meal, haha.

In the Mirror

“I don’t know if I continue, even today, always liking myself. But what I learned to do many years ago was to forgive myself. It is very important for every human being to forgive herself or himself because if you live, you will make mistakes- it is inevitable.

“But once you do and you see the mistake, then you forgive yourself and say, ‘well, if I’d known better I’d have done better,’ that’s all. So you say to people who you think you may have injured, ‘I’m sorry,’ and then you say to yourself, ‘I’m sorry.’

“If we all hold on to the mistake, we can’t see our own glory in the mirror because we have the mistake between our faces and the mirror; we can’t see what we’re capable of being.

“You can ask forgiveness of others, but in the end the real forgiveness is in one’s own self.

“I think that young men and women are so caught by the way they see themselves. Now mind you. When a larger society sees them as unattractive, as threats, as too black or too white or too poor or too fat or too thin or too sexual or too asexual, that’s rough.

“But you can overcome that. The real difficulty is to overcome how you think about yourself. If we don’t have that we never grow, we never learn, and sure as hell we should never teach.” – Maya Angelou

What’s looking you back in the mirror?? Take a picture and send it to me at brittany@lacelollipops.com and I’ll feature it on my blog next Tuesday. Be creative! Visit the Projects Tab at the top of the site to get the details!

Last Day Visiting Utah

I was lucky enough to be able to see one of my best friends Katrin and her lovely boyfriend Steven on my last day visiting Utah. Katrin and I met in French class around a year and a half ago and have been friends ever since!

We went to the mall and shopped and talked–and I bought the most adorable boots from Forever21! (more on those tomorrow!)

Cutest couple award? I think so!

I got my nails done with my grandma! It was very fun. The sparkly purple is by far one of my favorite fall/winter colors.

It was great that I got to spend time with all my family! We went to a wonderful Italian restaurant called Bucca di Beppo by Salt Lake City.

One of my favorite activities from the week was going to the BYU performance of White Christmas with my dad. I’m telling you right now that it was spectacular! It was probably the best choreography that I’ve ever seen in a musical. Ever.

Well, back to California I go!

Season of Change?

Leg warmers and jacket from Buckle, shoes from Forever 21 and dress is vintage.

With the leaves, temperature and seasons changing, I realized a lot can happen in just a short period of time. I’ve found the only way to keep going is to keep perspective.

On my flight into Utah, I decided that I wanted to cut my hair and dye out the blonde panels that I’ve had for the past couple summers as a sort of physical manifestation of starting fresh.

Everyone always tells me how beautiful my long hair is and how much of a shame it would be to cut it, even though I’ve been wanting to do it for a really long time.

I kept putting it off for various reasons, but I decided that change was already in the air, so why not be a little cliche and change my hair, too? It may have been a control thing.

I cut off about 5 inches and dyed the blonde to a dark purple. You can kind of see it in the first set, but I didn’t want it to be too obvious.

Needless to say, I love it to death and instead of missing my longer hair, I’ll give it a nostalgic wave goodbye and never look back!
